DEI Implementation Workshop

On Monday, October 23rd, City Staff presented proposed actions and strategies both planned and in process on the implementation of the DEI plan. The presentation can be found here.

DEI Process to Date

In April 2021 the City Council discussed interest in improving inclusion and equity, enhancing community engagement, and improving marginalized residents' access to government.  An Ad Hoc Committee was formed, which guided the development of a request for proposals to retain a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant.  As a result of that process, the Council selected Acosta Latino Learning Partnership (ALLP).

In addition to outreach to both the community and city staff, as well as an initial assessment, over the course of the last year, the City and ALLP have conducted nine community events to discuss issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the community.

These events included:

PHASE ONE COMMUNITY ENCUENTROS

  • AUGUST 11, 2022  |  Cafecito with the Spanish-speaking community at the Community Center

  • AUGUST 29, 2022  |  Community Encuentro at the Healdsburg Library

  • SEPTEMBER 28, 2022  |  Youth and Family Encuentro at the Healdsburg Community Center

  • OCTOBER 10, 2022  |  Youth-focused Encuentro at Healdsburg High School Library (Indigenous Peoples Day)

PHASE TWO COMMUNITY ENCUENTROS

  • JANUARY 26, 2023  |  Indigenous Voices of Healdsburg and in Lak'ech: Going Beyond Land Acknowledgements
    • Panelists included: Dr. Brenda Flyswithhawks, Clint McKay, and Alma Díaz
  • FEBRUARY 23, 2023  |  Is the Dream Alive and Well in Healdsburg? Contemporary and Historical Experiences of the African American Community in Healdsburg and Sonoma County
    • Panelists included: City Councilmember Ron Edwards and other community voices
  • MARCH 9, 2023  |  Living Together: Housing and Planning for a Better Healdsburg
    • Panelists included: City of Healdsburg Housing Director Stephen Sotomayor, Burbank Housing Vice President of Residential Development Efren Carillo, Deb Kravitz, Chair of the Housing Element Work Group and local resident, and Margaret Dematteo, Housing Policy Attorney with Legal Aid of Sonoma County
  • MARCH 30, 2023  |  Labor Days: Migrant and Service Community Experiences in Healdsburg
    • Panelists included: Healdsburg Resident Zeke Guzmán, North Bay Jobs with Justice's Director of Organizing Davin Cardenás, Montage International's Director of People, William Kamaka, Black Oak Coffee Roasters' Manager and Chef Beryl Adler, and more!
  • APRIL 27, 2023  |  Contemporary and Historical Experiences of the Asian-American and Pacific Islander Community in Healdsburg and Sonoma County

All events were planned with a bilingual audience in mind. Events offered live interpretation, childcare services, and snacks. Events included diverse participation from across our community and region.

As a result of that work, a DEI plan has been developed and was presented at the August 7, 2023 City Council Meeting.

Taller de Implementación del Plan DEI

El lunes 23 de octubre, el personal de la ciudad presentó las acciones y estrategias propuestas, tanto planificadas como en proceso, para la implementación del plan DEI. La presentación puede consultarse aquí.

Proceso DEI hasta la fecha

En abril de 2021, el Ayuntamiento debatió el interés por mejorar la inclusión y la equidad, potenciar la participación de la comunidad y mejorar el acceso de los residentes marginados a la administración.  Se formó un Comité Ad Hoc, que guió el desarrollo de una solicitud de propuestas para contratar a un consultor de diversidad, equidad e inclusión (DEI).  Como resultado de ese proceso, el Consejo seleccionó a Acosta Latino Learning Partnership (ALLP).

Además de la divulgación a la comunidad y el personal de la ciudad y una evaluación inicial, en el transcurso del último año, la Ciudad y ALLP han llevado a cabo nueve eventos de la comunidad para discutir temas de diversidad, equidad e inclusión (DEI) en la comunidad.

Como resultado de ese trabajo, se ha desarrollado un borrador del plan DEI que se presentará en la reunión del Consejo Municipal del 7 de agosto de 2023.
